Although laser dentistry might sound like a futuristic science, it’s a
technology that is quickly catching on and becoming more of the norm for a variety of different procedures. Offering a less invasive option for services such as cavity removal and gum surgery, laser dentistry is gaining popularity for a variety of reasons. At Complete Dental Care, we utilize laser dentistry to offer our patients a more enjoyable and seamless experience with their care.
In addition to being a more precise form of treatment for certain dental procedures, laser dentistry eliminates vibration and the loud sound of a drill, which can cause major discomfort for patients. Lasers can be used in dentistry to treat many problems, such as:
Laser dentistry follows a pretty similar procedure regardless of whether it requires a hard tissue laser (for teeth and bone) or a soft tissue laser (for gums and other soft tissues). First, the dentist will begin by cleaning the area to remove and plaque or tartar. Numbing/anesthesia won’t be necessary due to the greater level of comfort that lasers allow for patients. The laser will then be directed on the affected area and turned on, and the dentist will carefully move it depending on the needs of the procedure. The entire process shouldn’t take more than an hour or two depending on the extent of the treatment needed. After the procedure, patients may feel sore at the treatment site, but will experience less pain and after-care discomfort than other methods of treatment.
As with any medical or dental procedure, it is important to follow the after care instructions of your healthcare provider to ensure proper healing. Although there shouldn’t be any major after care concerns for laser dentistry procedures, your dentist may recommend eating softer foods for a number of days after treatment, and avoiding brushing too aggressively. For any minor pain or swelling, NSAIDS can be taken. The healing process should take roughly 2-4 weeks depending on the treatment you’ve received and the way your body responds to the use of the laser.
