Did you know that hundreds of thousands of people avoid going to the dentist for routine care every year due to dental anxiety? At Complete Dental Care, we don't want any patients to avoid getting the dental care they need due to fear and anxiety. That's why we offer a number of sedation dentistry options to patients in order to give them a comfortable and relaxed experience in our practice.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

There are a few different types of sedation dentistry that can be used depending on the situation:

Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is one of the most common types of sedation used in dental practices. It is a safe and effective way to help patients relax during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and takes effect within minutes. The patient remains awake and alert during the procedure, but may feel lightheaded or dizzy.

Oral Sedation. Oral sedation is another type of sedation dentistry that can be used for patients who experience mild to moderate dental anxiety. Medication is taken by mouth before the appointment, and the patient remains awake during the procedure. However, they may feel drowsy and have little to no memory of the appointment afterwards.

IV Sedation. IV sedation is a type of sedation dentistry that is used for patients who experience moderate to severe dental anxiety. Medication is administered through an IV, and the patient remains awake during the procedure. However, they may not remember much of the appointment afterwards.

Signs Sedation Dentistry May Be for You

There are a few different signs that you may need sedation dentistry, including:

You experience anxiety or fear when thinking about going to the dentist.

You have a low pain tolerance.

You have a sensitive gag reflex.

You need a lengthy or complex procedure.

How Long Does Sedation Dentistry Take?

The length of time that sedation dentistry will take will depend on the type of sedation used. Nitrous oxide typically wears off within minutes, while oral and IV sedation may take a few hours.
